Teeth Whitening Q & A

What makes teeth lose their color?

There are several reasons why your teeth become dull or lose their shine. Most commonly, it’s a combination of consuming too many stain-causing substances and not practicing good oral hygiene at home.

Some of the products that frequently stain teeth include:

  • Darkly pigmented foods, like berries and tomato-based sauces
  • Darkly pigmented beverages, like soda, red wine, and coffee
  • Tobacco products, like cigarettes and chewing tobacco

Your teeth might also become discolored as a result of medications. Certain antihistamines and antipsychotics can cause discoloration, as can exposure to certain antibiotics before the age of eight.

Teeth also naturally lose their whiteness as a result of aging. As you get older, the hard outer layer of your teeth (enamel) wears down, exposing more of the soft inner layer (dentin), which turns yellow over time.

What teeth whitening treatments do you offer?

NRH Family Dentistry offers two types of professional teeth whitening:

In-office whitening

In-office whitening dramatically improves your smile with just one hour-long appointment, making it the perfect solution for people with busy schedules or those who need to whiten their smile for an upcoming event.

Dr. Gottam protects your gums and the soft tissues of your mouth with a special gel, then carefully covers your teeth with Opalescence® BOOST® light-activated whitening gel. She shines a specialized light or laser on your teeth, which helps the whitening gel penetrate your enamel and break up tough stains.

After your procedure, Dr. Gottam takes an impression of your teeth to make a custom whitening tray for touch-ups at home.

At-home whitening

Just like the touch-up trays that you get after in-office whitening, at-home whitening involves using a bleaching tray made from an impression of your smile. You fill your bleaching tray with a professional-strength whitening solution, then wear the trays on your teeth for 30-60 minutes twice a day. After a couple of weeks, your smile will be noticeably brighter. At-home whitening is a more cost-effective solution that gives you the ability to whiten from the comfort and convenience of your home, office, or wherever you’d like.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Most patients don’t experience any discomfort from teeth whitening. Some patients notice increased sensitivity in their teeth during or after their treatments. If your teeth are sensitive after teeth whitening, Dr. Gottam can give you toothpaste specifically designed to desensitize your teeth and ease your discomfort.
