Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are individual tooth-shaped coverings permanently sealed to the front of your teeth.

Veneers are made of porcelain or composite resin that looks just like your natural tooth enamel, both in color and translucency. Once bonded in place, veneers look just like a new-and-improved version of your natural smile.

How can veneers improve my smile?

Veneers cover up the visible part of your teeth, effectively hiding any:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Stains
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Teeth that are too small

Veneers enable you to redesign your smile to make it more beautiful, uniform, and healthy-looking.

How do I get veneers?

Before you get veneers, you have a consultation with Dr. Gottam where you discuss your ideal smile and how you’d like to improve the appearance of your teeth. If you want, you can bring in photos of smiles you like to serve as a reference point.

Dr. Gottam helps you pick out the size, shape, and color for your veneers that best enhance your smile while still complementing the other aesthetic qualities of your face. Then, she prepares your teeth by shaving off a thin layer of enamel from their front side.

Then, Dr. Gottam takes an impression of your smile and gives you temporary veneers to wear. She sends your impression to a lab that uses it to custom-build your veneers so that they fit perfectly on your teeth, which typically takes a week or so. When your permanent veneers are ready, you come back to NRH Family Dentistry to have them bonded to your teeth.

How do I care for my veneers?

You care for your veneers as if they were your natural teeth, brushing twice a day, and flossing daily. Veneers are typically stain-resistant, so you might actually find them slightly easier to take care of, but you should still be diligent with your brushing and flossing to keep your smile healthy. You also need to be careful to not bite down on hard substances, like ice or fingernails, since it might chip or break your veneers.
